Compassionate Counselling for Women Affected by Trauma

With warmth, understanding, and no judgement

Supporting you to gently process, understand, and recover from trauma — at a pace that feels right for you.

You do not have to face this alone.

I offer a compassionate, confidential space where your experiences are heard and respected, and where we can work together towards greater understanding, stability, and wellbeing.

How I Can Help

Therapy that meets you where you are

I am an humanistic integrative counsellor based in Madrid, supporting women experiencing:

Emotional trauma

Childhood wounds

Anxiety and overwhelm

Life transitions

Loss and bereavement

Difficult relationships and attachment patterns

Together, we can explore what is happening for you, helping you feel more grounded, connected to yourself, and better able to navigate life's challenges.

My Approach

A gentle, integrative way of working

Healing from trauma is not about fixing what is wrong with you. It is about understanding what has happened and creating the conditions for change and recovery.

I draw on a range of approaches depending on your needs:

Talk therapy

A space to explore your experiences, thoughts, and feelings in a supportive environment.

Working with the body

Trauma affects both mind and body. We may work with awareness, grounding, and physical sensations to support regulation and wellbeing.

Emotional processing

Using guided reflection, breathing exercises, visualisation, and other techniques to help you engage with emotions safely.

Nature as a therapeutic resource

Outdoor sessions can support perspective, emotional regulation, and a sense of connection.

This flexible approach allows therapy to adapt to you, rather than expecting you to adapt to a particular method.

Trauma and the Body

Understanding the impact of trauma

Trauma is not only something we remember. It also affects how the body responds to the world around us.

Even when we consciously want to move forward, the nervous system may remain alert to potential danger, long after a difficult experience has passed. This can affect us physically, emotionally, and in our relationships.

You may recognise some of the following:

Feeling constantly anxious, alert, or unable to relax

Feeling numb, disconnected, or shut down

Tightness in the chest, shallow breathing, or ongoing tension

Difficulty sleeping or feeling rested

Emotional reactions that feel intense or confusing

Relationship patterns that seem difficult to change

These responses are not signs of weakness or failure. They are often protective adaptations developed by the nervous system to help you cope and stay safe.

Therapy can help you understand these patterns and develop new ways of responding that feel safer and more supportive.

How We Can Work Together

Online Therapy

A familiar and accessible space where you can explore your experiences from the comfort of home.

Walk & Talk Therapy

Sessions outdoors in nature can support emotional regulation, reflection, and conversation.

You may choose either format, or combine both, depending on your preferences and circumstances.

What Makes This Different

Therapy centred around your needs

A trauma-informed approach

No pressure to discuss difficult experiences before you are ready

A focus on trust, safety, and emotional regulation

A warm, collaborative therapeutic relationship

About Me

Jo Steel – Humanistic Integrative Counsellor in Madrid

I am Jo Steel, an integrative humanistic counsellor based in Madrid, offering therapy in both English and Spanish.

I support women experiencing trauma, anxiety, emotional overwhelm, and significant life changes, providing a space where they can explore their experiences with support and understanding.

Before becoming a counsellor, I spent more than twenty years working in education and five years in publishing. These roles gave me valuable insight into people, communication, and the challenges that can arise in both personal and professional life.

In 2021–2022, I completed a Master’s degree in Integrative Humanistic Counselling at the Galene Institute in Madrid, training in a relational, humanistic, and trauma-informed approach to therapy.

Originally from the UK and now a Spanish citizen, I work with an international community, offering outdoor therapy in Madrid and online counselling worldwide.

My Way of Working

Integrating therapy, nature, and nervous system awareness

My work is grounded in integrative humanistic counselling, meaning that each session is tailored to your individual needs while maintaining a strong focus on emotional safety and trauma awareness.

I am particularly interested in the relationship between trauma, the nervous system, and wellbeing, and in how creating the right therapeutic environment can support recovery and growth.

Alongside online therapy, I also offer Walk & Talk therapy in Madrid, involving:

  • Outdoor sessions in green spaces that encourage reflection and connection
  • Opportunities to work in ways that feel more natural and less formal than a traditional therapy room

Many women find that being outdoors helps them feel more relaxed, present, and connected to themselves.

A Little More About Me

Nature plays an important role in both my personal life and my therapeutic work.

In my free time, I enjoy walking and cycling, and I value the calm, perspective, and sense of connection that time outdoors can bring.

This naturally informs the way I work, creating spaces where you can slow down, reflect, and feel supported as you move towards healing and change.
